The Friars tied a school-record with 17 3-pointers made (they also made 17 vs. Loyola-Chicago, Jan. 19, 2004) and broke the previous record of 34 3-point attempts set against Connecticut on Jan. 22, 1992 with their 40 tries on the night. In BIG EAST Conference play, the 17 3-pointers made is a PC all-time high.
Junior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) tied his BIG EAST career-high with 25 points and dished out five assists. Senior guards Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) and Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) added 23 and 21 points respectively, marking the first time since December 19, 2007 against Sacred Heart that three Friars posted at least 20 points.
Villanova jumped out to a 12-2 lead behind 10 early points from junior guard Scottie Reynolds. Five consecutive points by Xavier moved the Friars to within four at 14-10, but the Wildcats responded with consecutive 3-pointers to take a 20-10 lead.
A 4-point play by Curry moved the Friars back within six and he hit yet another trey on the next possession to make the score 20-17 Villanova with 9:26 left in the first half.
McKenzie tied the score and capped a 10-0 Friar run with another triple but the Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run of their own to build a 28-20 lead with 5:33 to go in the half.
A 3-pointer by Dwayne Anderson moved the Wildcats up 14 at 42-28 and Villanova led 49-34 at intermission.
The Wildcats shot 48.6 percent (17-35) in the half and made eight 3-pointers. Reynolds led Villanova with 14 points.
Villanova led by as many as 20 early in the second half (59-39 with 15:38 left in the second game), but Providence moved within 14 at 64-50 at the 13:14 mark of the second half. A 3-pointer by Xavier cut the Wildcats advantage to 10 at 69-59 with 8:59 left in the game.
Efejuku nailed a 3-pointer to move the Friars within eight and a Xavier triple moved the Friars within six at 77-71 with 5:05 to go in the game. A late barrage of three 3-pointers by Curry in the game's final 22 seconds moved the Friars as close as one, but Villanova made its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win. Reynolds paced Villanova with 31 points, including a 13-of-15 performance from the free throw line.
The Friars hit the road for a two-game southern swing, beginning with a 4:00 p.m. tilt against West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Morgantown. On February 11, PC plays USF at 7:00 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
