ORONO, Maine - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at the University of Maine, 3-1, Friday night in a Hockey East game played at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

Providence (7-6-1, 2-4-1 Hockey East) had five power-play opportunities in the first period, but could not convert. However, it was Maine (7-7-1, 5-4-1 Hockey East) which nearly scored on the penalty kill when Brian Flynn stole a pass in his own zone, skated in on a breakaway before firing a wrist shot that was saved by PC goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) with the blocker.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead at 6:01 of the second period when freshman Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) scored his second goal of the season. Classmate Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) emerged from the right wing corner with the puck and played it to the slot to Schaller who ripped a one-timer that glanced off the left post and into the net. Freshman Tim Smith (Superior, Wis.) also assisted on the goal to collect his first career point. However, the Black Bears responded just 14 seconds later when Gustav Nyquist scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Nyquist pounced on a turnover and fired a shot from the bottom of the right circle past Beaudry. Nyquist struck again at 9:36 as the Black Bears took advantage of a turnover to take a 2-1 lead. Tanner House stole the puck just inside the PC blue line, played it to Flynn who then slid a pass to the slot to Nyquist. Nyquist ripped a high wrist shot into the upper right corner of the net.

It appeared that Nyquist capped off his hat trick 57 seconds into the third period, but his goal was not allowed as it was ruled the puck went off Nyquist's foot. Moments later, the Friars went on the power play and nearly scored the equalizer as sophomore Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.) fired a slap shot from the right point, but his shot hit the lower right post. With 2:26 left in the third period, the Friars skated on their eighth power play of the night and pulled Beaudry for a 6-on-4 advantage. However, Matt Mangene scored an empty-net goal with 41 seconds left to seal the win. Beaudry finished 27 saves, while Scott Darling stopped 22 shots.

The two teams will complete the two-game weekend series on Saturday, December 5 at Alfond Arena.
