FRIARS CLOSE OUT FIRST HALF AT HOME... The Friars will close out the first half of the season with a pair of home games beginning on Friday, December 11 against New Hampshire. PC also will face Boston College on Saturday, December 12.
SERIES HISTORY UNH... In 137 meetings between the two teams, the Wildcats hold a 73-50-14 lead, but the Friars own a 31-23-9 record in Providence. Last season, the Wildcats posted a 2-0-1 record against the Friars, including a 4-2 win at Schneider Arena on February 14, 2009. The Friars are seeking their first win over the Wildcats since February 24, 2007 when they earned a 7-1 triumph at Schneider Arena.
SCOUTING UNH... No. 19 UNH comes into Friday's game on a season long six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1), including three consecutive wins. Most recently, the Wildcats defeated Vermont, 5-2, on Sunday, December 6 in Burlington, Vt. UNH trailed 1-0, but scored the next four goals, including Greg Manz's game winner, en route to the win. Brian Foster made 28 saves in goal for UNH. Bobby Butler leads the team in scoring with 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists), while Blake Kessel is second with 17 points (five goals,12 assists). Foster has played in all 16 games and has a 3.44 goals against average and a .892 goals against average.
FRIAR QUICK NOTES... • Through 15 games this season, Providence College already has equalled its win total from last season (seven) ... • The Friars already have defeated three ranked teams this season, including No. 3 UMass Lowell on November 24. Last season, PC recorded one win over a ranked opponent ... • Four of the Friars' seven wins this season have been by one goal, while they posted three one-goal wins last season ... • The Friars rank 16th in the country in team defense, allowing 2.60 goals per game.
FRIARS AT HOME... Providence College owns a 3-1-1 home record this season, including a 1-1-1 mark in Hockey East action. The Friars are 2-0-1 in their last three home games, including a 4-2 upset victory over No. 3 UMass Lowell on November 24. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-11-2 mark at Schneider Arena.
FRIARS AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS... Providence is 3-3 against ranked teams this season. The Friars have posted wins at then No. 7 Notre Dame (3-2), at No. 17 Massachusetts (2-1) and against No. 3 UMass Lowell (4-2). The Friars have been defeated by No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 17 Massachusetts and No. 15 Vermont. Last season, PC finished with a 1-10-2 record against ranked opponents. The one win came at No. 2 Boston University on January 13.
FAYNE OFF TO FAST START... Mark Fayne is off to a quick start with 11 points (three goals, eight assists) through the first 15 games this season. He is one point shy of his career-high 12 points (five goals, seven assists) which he accomplished in 2006-07. He has three multiple-point games, including a career-high four points (one goal, three assists) in a 4-2 win over No. 3 UMass Lowell on November 24. In addition, he is tied for 25th in the nation among defensemen, averaging 0.73 points per game.
FRIARS DEFEATED AT MAINE... The Friars were swept at Maine in a two-game weekend series at Maine. PC was defeated, 3-1, on Friday, December 4. Freshman Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) scored in the second period to give the Friars a 1-0 lead, but the Black Bears scored two quick goals to take the lead and added an empty-net goal in the third period. In net, sophomore Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) made 27 saves. The following night, the Friars were defeated by the same 3-1 score at Maine. Junior Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored the lone goal for the Friars, while Beaudry made 33 saves, including 20 in the first period.
BEAUDRY AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS... Alex Beaudry comes into this weekend among the top-16 in the nation in two statistical categories. He ranks 16th with a 2.25 goals against average and eighth with a .929 save percentage. Beaudry has helped the Friar defense allow 39 goals in 15 games.
FRIARS IN CLOSE GAMES... Four of PC's seven wins this season have been one-goal contests. PC edged Holy Cross, 2-1, on October 10 and Notre Dame, 3-2, on October 15. PC also posted a 2-1 triumph at No. 17 Massachusetts on October 31 and most recently defeated Brown, 4-3, on November 17. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-3 record in one-goal games.
TIMELY SCORING... In three of their seven victories this season, the Friars have scored late goals in the second and third period. The Friars scored with 1:18 left in the second period in their 2-1 victory over Holy Cross on October 10. On October 15, PC posted a 3-2 win at No. 7 Notre Dame thanks to a goal with 3:46 left in the third period. The Friars also scored with 3:46 left in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and post a 3-1 triumph at Bowling Green on October 24. In addition, Providence also has scored in the first five minutes of the opening period in four of its six wins.
FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATE... Three Providence College alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani '00 is playing for the Edmonton Oilers, while Hal Gill '97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is currently skating with the Montreal Canadiens. Colin McDonald '07 recently was called up to play with the Edmonton Oilers and scored his first NHL goal on November 28 against the Vancouver Canucks. In addition, there are two former Friars who will play an integral part on U.S.A. men's hockey team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke '77, who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will serve as the general manager of Team U.S.A. Ron Wilson '77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, will be the head coach of Team U.S.A. Lou Lamoriello '63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the current President and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fall on November 9.
