BOSTON, Mass. - - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at Northeastern, 4-1, in a Hockey East game played at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. With the loss, Providence is now 6-4 overall and 1-3 in league action. Northeastern improved to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Neither team scored in the first 20 minutes as both teams attempted 12 shots each and had one power-play opportunity. However, Northeastern struck for quick two goals early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Tyler McNeely scored on the power play just 1:01 into the period on a shot from the right circle. Just 47 seconds later, Wade MacLeod tacked on another goal for a two-goal edge. Just prior to being hit hard on a check, Chris Donovan played a cross ice pass to the right circle to Drew Muench, who then slipped a one-time pass in front MacLeod. MacLeod then tucked the puck into the open net at 1:48.
The Huskies increased their lead to 3-0 at 4:02 of the third period on a goal by Kyle Kraemer. The Friars finally broke through at the 13:23 mark of the third period on a power-play goal by freshman Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.). Schaller skated down the left wing side before firing a shot that found the back of the net marking his first collegiate goal. Junior Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.) also assisted on the goal. However, the Huskies added a power-play goal at 17:41 to seal the win.
The Huskies finished with a 34-29 shot advantage as PC goalie Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) recorded 30 saves. Rawlings stopped 28 shots.
The two teams will complete the weekend series on Saturday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
