Providence, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Georgetown 8-0 on Saturday, October 24, in Providence, R.I. With this victory, the Friars assured themselves a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship. Providence will host the BIG EAST Tournament at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on November 7 and 8.

Julie Ruggieri (Barrington R.I.) scored the first goal of the game for the Friars on a reverse stick shot from the middle of the circle. The unassisted goal came at the 1:15 mark. Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) gave the Friars a 2-0 lead when she put in a shot off her own rebound. Ruggieri scored her second goal of the game at the 9:32 mark when she deflected a shot initially taken by Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.). Marois was credited with the assist. Senior Megan Montecalvo (Ipswich, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season when she tipped the ball into cage off a Marois shot attempt at 24:25. Marois was again credited with the assist. Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) gave the Friars a 5-0 lead when she beat the Hoyas' goalkeeper one-on-one and slipped the ball into the lower right side of the cage.

In the second half, Providence added to its lead when senior Kerianne Murphy (Walpole, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season. Murphy scored the unassisted goal out of a penalty corner. The Friars took a 7-0 lead at 57:13 when Marois put in a goal with an assist from Kelly Grogan (Allenwood, N.J). The final goal for the Friars came at 65:44 when Hudson scored on a deflection. Sophomore Stephanie Matone (Washington, N.J.) was credited with the assist.

Goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) was credited with the victory and improves her record to 6-8 on the season. Chamberlain played 45 minutes and recorded six saves on the day. Sophomore Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) replaced Chamberlain and played 24 minutes in the match.

The 8-0 victory was tied for the largest margin of victory this season. On Friday, October 9 the Friars defeated Rutgers 8-0.

The Friars held the advantage in shots, 25-9, as well as penalty corners, 11-8.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 25 when they face Maine at 2:00 p.m. The game will be held at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
