Providence, R.I. -- Junior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, NJ) scored both goals in the Providence College women's soccer team's 2-0 victory over Stony Brook on Sunday, August 31 at Glay Field. With the victory, Providence improves to 2-0 on the season while the Seawolves fall to 1-2.
Providence put heavy pressure on the Stony Brook defense throughout the first half. In the 10th minute, junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) received the ball deep in the Seawolf zone. She sent a pass to Ricciardi across the middle of the box, which Ricciardi put past goalkeeper Marisa Viola to give the Friars an early 1-0 lead. It marked Ricciardi's second goal of the season, while Camburn got her first point of the season with the assist.
The Friar pressure continued into the second half. In the 51st minute, Camburn stole the ball near the Seawolves' box. She tapped the ball to sophomore Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) who took a shot that was deflected by Viola. Later, Ricciardi gained control of the ball inside the box and was tackled to force a penalty kick. She promptly converted the kick, to make the Friar lead 2-0.
PC goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, NH) made one of her three saves late in the game as SBU's Kate Collins took a shot from 10 yards. Schott made a diving stop to seal her first clean sheet. Viola made eight saves on the day for the Seawolves on 15 Friar shots.
Providence will continue its homestand with Holy Cross visiting Glay Field on Thursday, September 4 at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday, September 7 the Manhattan Jaspers will take on the Friars at 1:00 p.m.
