Volleyball Falls to Canisius, 3-2, In Season Opener

The Providence College volleyball team lost its opening match of the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament, 3-2, to Canisius on Friday, August 29. The Golden Griffins won with scores of 21-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-19 and 15-7. Canisius starts the season 1-0, while Providence falls to 0-1.

Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Friars with 17 kills and eight total blocks. Toney's eighth block moved her past Heidi Brady into fourth place on the team's all-time list with 330. Senior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) also recorded double-digit kills with 14. Leading the team defensively, senior Aida Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted 13 digs while adding six kills on offense. Senior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) registered 43 assists and added two service aces.

Providence opened the match strong, leading for most of the first game en route to a 25-21 victory. The Friars also controlled game two, leading 13-4 and 17-8 before putting it away, 25-17. Flynn led the team with five kills in the game. Canisius performed well under pressure, winning the next two games, 25-20 and 25-19 to force a fifth game. In the final contest, the Golden Griffins ultimately prevailed, 15-7.

The Friars will play a second match today against South Carolina State at 3:00 p.m. The team will then face Hampton and South Dakota Saturday in day two of the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament.
