The Providence College volleyball team defeated Hampton, 3-0, on Saturday, August 30, in the team's third match of the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament. The Friars won with scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-12. The victory moves PC to 2-1 on the season, while the Pirates fall to 0-3.
Senior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) led the Friar attack with 12 kills and an excellent .632 hitting percentage. For the season, Flynn is now hitting at an impressive .595 clip. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added eight kills and now has 34 for the year. On the defensive front, senior defensive specialist Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) recorded 11 digs and added five service aces. Three Friar freshmen made contributions, with Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) posting three kills and four total blocks, Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) adding six digs and three service aces and Chelsey Thompson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) registering seven digs and two service aces.
In the first game of the match, both teams traded points for a 7-7 score. Providence then scored five straight points and took control en route to a 25-15 win. With the Friars ahead 19-17 in the second game, the team won six of the contest's final seven points to take it, 25-18. With a two game lead, PC continued to play well, winning game three, 25-12.
The Friars play South Dakota today at 1:00 p.m. in the team's final game of the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament.
