Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (5-3) cruised to an 86-62 win over Brown University (3-4) on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Sophomore guard Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Friars with 22 points and added five rebounds, marking the second time that Brooks has eclipsed the 20-point mark this season.
The Friars built an early 16-11 lead behind 10 points from big men Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) and Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass.). A Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) 3-pointer with 9:18 to go in the half put PC up 21-13 and a nifty Brooks finger roll extended the lead to 26-13 at the 7:21 mark. Brooks finished the half with a team-high 17 points as the Friars led 48-25 at the break. PC shot a blistering 60.6 from the field and held Brown to 34.6 percent. The Friars were excellent with the basketball, committing only two turnovers in the half.
Providence extended the lead to 59-32 at the 16:01 mark of the second half on a three-pointer by senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.). A three-pointer and fast break lay-in by Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) on consecutive possessions gave the Friars their largest advantage of the game at 71-41 and Brown was unable to cut into the lead for the remainder of the contest.
For the game, PC held the Bears to just 19 field goals and 33.3 percent shooting, both season bests for the Friar defense. Curry posted 14 points, eight assists and a season-low 0 turnovers, while Kale chipped in 13 points and eight boards. Kale has posted double-digit point totals in six-straight games and seven-of-the-eight contests on the year. Hanke finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Peter Sullivan led Brown with 16 points.
The Friars resume play on Saturday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. against in-state rival Rhode Island at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. A limited number of tickets are still available and can be reserved at 401-865-GOPC.
