Women's Basketball Defeated At Quinnipiac, 78-69

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac, 78-69, in non-conference action on Sunday, November 30 in Hamden, Conn. Erin Kerner led the Bobcat offense with 26 points. Senior Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Friars with 14 points.
In the first half, the Bobcats outscored the Friars, 48-34, on 65.4-percent shooting from the floor (17-26), including an 8-9 performance from beyond the three-point arc. Three Quinnipiac players cracked double figures in the first half led by Kerner, who netted 14 points on 5-7 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from three-point range. The Friars shot 11-26 from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 5-11 (45.5-percent) from three-point range. Bove and junior Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) each recorded six points to lead the way. Quinnipiac held a 48-34 advantage at halftime.
Providence cut the Bobcat's lead to five (55-50) in the second half with 13:18 remaining on the clock with a 16-7 scoring run. Quinnipiac pushed its lead back to double digits (62-52) with 9:43 left in the game. The Friars responded with a lay-up at the 9:22 mark to get within eight (62-54) 21-seconds later, but it would prove to be as close as Providence could get down the stretch.
Providence shot 48.3-percent (14-29) in the second half, while Quinnipiac cooled down quite a bit at 36.8-percent (7-19). Despite the Friars' hot shooting, the Bobcats were able to maintain control of the game with a decisive advantage from the charity stripe. Quinnipiac nailed 15-18 free throws in the second half, compared to the Friars' 5-6 shooting from the foul line. The Bobcats finished the game 21-27 from the free-throw line. Providence completed the night 12-16.
Three other Friars joined Bove in double figures on the day. Sophomore Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) tallied 13 points, while senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) each recorded 11 points. Marandola hauled in a team-best five rebounds, while freshman Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) dished a game-high five assists.
Quinnipiac out-rebounded Providence, 32-24.
Providence (2-4) returns to action on Wednesday, December 3 against Massachusetts. The game will be played in Amherst, Mass. and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
