LOWELL, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 6-1, at UMass Lowell Friday night in a Hockey East game played at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass.
The River Hawks (6-4-0, 4-2-0 HEA) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the first 2:01. Mike Potacco re-directed a shot from Jeremy Dehner just 53 seconds into the game to give his team a 1-0 edge. At 2:01, Kory Falite scored an unassisted goal, his seventh of the season, to make the score, 2-0. However, the Friars had the edge the rest of the period, finishing with an 11-5 shot advantage. PC also had three power-play chances, but were not able to convert as UML netminder Nevin Hamilton finished with 11 stops.
The Friars' (2-8-1, 0-7-1 HEA) best chance to score in the second period came at the 11:15 mark when freshman Robert Maloney (Eagan, Minn.) set up senior defenseman Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) who snapped a back hander from the slot, but Hamilton made a right pad save. The River Hawks converted their first power-play chance of the night at the 17:35 mark to increase their lead to 3-0. Nick Schaus set up Nick Monroe right in front and Monroe tapped the puck into the empty net for hist first goal of the season.
The River Hawks added two goals early in the third period to make the score, 5-0, at the 6:24 mark, before the Friars got on the scoreboard at 7:03. Taormina gained possession of the puck and skated around the UML net before scoring on a wrap around to cu the lead to 5-1. The River Hawks tacked on five-on-three power-play goal to complete the scoring 15:55.
The Friars finished with a 31-27 shot advantage as Hamilton totalled 30 saves, while senior Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.) stopped 21 shots.
