PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team opened its season with an 85-57 exhibition win over the University of Ottawa on Saturday, November 1 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Senior Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass.) led the Friars with 15 points and nine rebounds.

After trailing 6-4 at the 17:28 mark, the Friars used a 17-0 run over the next 5:16 to take a 19-6 lead midway through the first half. A three-point play by senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) gave Providence a 37-18 lead with 4:18 remaining in the period and the Friars would enter intermission with a 39-25 advantage.

Junior Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the squad with eight points, seven rebounds and two assists in the half. The Friar defense held Ottawa to 27.3 percent shooting from the field and forced 16 first-half turnovers.

Ottawa moved to within 11 in the opening minute of the second half, but the Friars put the game away with a 23-6 run, capped off by a Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) jump shot with 4:46 remaining.

New head coach Keno Davis rotated 14 players in throughout the game. The Friars dominated Ottawa on the glass with a 55-35 rebounding advantage.

Providence is back in action on Saturday, November 8 against Slippery Rock at 7:00 p.m. in the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The game is the Friars' final exhibition tilt of the season.
