Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team won its final exhibition tuneup, 105-84, against Slippery Rock University on Saturday, November 8 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Senior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) led the Friars with 21 points, four assists and four steals.
The Friars were aggressive early, with Slippery Rock committing seven fouls in the game's first seven minutes. PC took advantage, going 11-12 from the line to build a 25-19 lead with 10:18 remaining in the first half.
Over the next 5:06, Providence went on a 19-9 run to build a 16-point lead and went into the half up 49-37. The Friars took 27 free throws to The Rock's one in the game's first stanza and held them to 22.2% from three-point range. JuniorBrian McKenzie(Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team with 13 first-half points.
Providence opened the second half on a 20-9 and pulled ahead 69-46 with 15:48 remaining. The team shot a blistering 61.8 percent from the field in the period and did not let Slippery Rock back into the game. Xavier registered 13 second-half points and finished 3-5 from three-point territory.
Head Coach Keno Davis rotated 13 players in throughout the game. The Friars led a balanced scoring attack, with five players posting double-digit point totals. SeniorWeyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) contributed 19 points and seven rebounds and McKenzie added 17 points and two steals.
Junior Denell Stephens (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced The Rock, recording a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Providence opens the regular season Saturday, November 15 against New England foe Northeastern at 7:00 p.m. in the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars are 56-5 all-time in home openers at the Dunk.
