PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (12-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) lost to Seton Hall (13-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) by the score of 88-75 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of a nationally televised ESPN2 audience on Thursday night. Junior guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) scored a team-best 23 points to lead the offense.
PC began the game 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from the field over the first 12:12 of the game but went 13-of-42 (30.9 percent) the rest of the way. Junior guard Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) added 16 points, including 13 in the first half while sophomore guard Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 11.
McKenzie picked up a pair of early fouls. Two within the first 2:30 of play, yet it mattered little as the Friars opened the game on a 9-2 run forcing Seton Hall to burn its first timeout of the game.
The Friars increased their lead to 10, 17-7 with 13:13 left in the first half following a series of nice plays by Kale. Beginning with a nice block down low on the defensive end, Kale ran the court and was rewarded with a feed he converted for a lay up. He was fouled on the play and made the basket. He converted the free throw for the conventional 3-point play.
The Friars also led 21-11 with 10:31 left in the first half and pushed it to a 15-point advantage, 26-11 with 8:49 remaining. It was their largest lead of the game.
Seton Hall answered with a 21-9 run to cut it to three, 35-32 with 3:48 left in the first half. Another few points capped a 26-12 run for the Pirates to end the first half. The Friars held a slim, 38-37 lead at the intermission.
The Pirates opened the second half with a trio of free throws to hold their first lead of the game, 40-39. Providence would never lead again. PC went 6-of-23 from 3-point range and shot 38.3 percent from the field for the game.
Seton Hall was led by a game-high 22 points from Brian Lang.
PC fan Kyle Tibbetts hit a half court shot during the intermission and won a 2008 Nissan Sentra from Balise.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Syracuse. The 2 p.m. game will be broadcast locally on Cox Sports as well as on the MSG network and ESPN Full Court.
