PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College is proud to announce that Men's Basketball Coach Tim Welsh has made a $50,000 pledge to the Varsity Athletics Weight Room in the new Concannon Fitness Center, which is scheduled to open in September.

"We are very appreciative of Tim's generosity," Athletics Director Bob Driscoll said. "It is an example of the type of commitment that our coaches and staff have demonstrated toward our fundraising goals. Tim understands that his funds will help all of the student-athletes at Providence College. We hope that we continue to get this type of support for all our projects."

The new Concannon Fitness Center will serve as a unifying hub of activity for Providence College students, integrating student life and creating an environment to nurture the physical heart of the PC community while promoting student health, as well as spiritual, social, and intellectual growth. Prominently located and unifying existing and new components of the complex - Alumni Hall, the Peterson Recreation Center, and the Slavin Center - the Concannon Fitness Center will create a new space for all members of the Providence College community to come together. The 25,000-square-foot center will transform outdated recreation areas into cutting-edge cardiovascular and aerobic exercise facilities. In addition to one room for the exclusive use of varsity athletes, the second level will offer Nautilus equipment and free weights. A glass meeting room and an observation room will provide additional gathering space as well as spectacular views of the new artificial-turf field.

"I am excited to be able to help support the new Varsity Athletics Weight Room," Welsh stated. "Father Shanley and Bob Driscoll have embraced the concept of improving the facilities for our student-athletes. They understand how important that is for us to compete at the top tier of Division I athletics. I am proud to be able to help with this project."

The new center will complement the facilities and services of Alumni Hall's sports medicine facility, which has been significantly expanded and modernized as part of the project. As a 21st century fitness center, offering bright, modern facilities for individual workouts, group fitness classes, and student activities, the Concannon Fitness Center will help ensure that students will treasure their PC experience.
