Women's Hoops Falls At Cincinnati, 74-61

CINCINNATI, OHIO - In a game, delayed by significant snowfall and poor road conditions in the Cincinnati area, the Providence College women's basketball team fell to Cincinnati, 74-61, in BIG EAST action on February 6. Sophomore Chelesea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) scored a game-high 26 points in the Friar effort, including 16 in the second half. She also grabbed 10 rebounds to register her eighth double-double of the season. Carla Jacobs and Karen Twehues each tallied 13 points for Cincinnati.
Cincinnati took a 12-point lead (34-22) into halftime after starting the game on a 7-0 scoring run. Providence hit its first field goal of the night at the 15:44 mark as senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) netted a three-point bucket to make the score, 7-3. The Friars trailed by two (11-9) at 12:31, but the Bearcats went on a 20-8 scoring run to take their largest lead of the game (31-17) with 4:08 left on the clock. PC held a 5-3 scoring advantage in the final three minutes of the opening half. Marandola recorded 10 points in the half for PC, while Karen Twehues connected on nine points for Cincinnati.
In the second half, Cincinnati took its largest lead of the game (17 points) with a three pointer by Jill Stephens to make the score 45-28 at 17:03. Providence chipped away at the deficit and pulled within nine (68-59) with 1:20 left to play, but was the closest it could get the rest of the way. Cincinnati made good on eight of eight free throw attempts in the final 1:18 of play to seal the win.
Freshman Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 12 points for PC, while Snyder finished the night with 11. Sophomore Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) dished a team-high five assists and added four points, six rebounds and two steals in front of a hometown crowd.
Angel Morgan and Shelly Bellman checked in with 11 points apiece for the Bearcats. Michelle Jones added 10 to round out the list of five Cincinnati players in double figures.
Providence College (12-11, 2-8 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday, February 10 against BIG EAST foe St. John's. The game will be played at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
