Women's Basketball Falls To Georgetown, 73-66

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Georgetown, 73-66, in BIG EAST Conference action on February 24 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored a game-high 25 points in the Friar effort. Georgetown's Kate Carlin scored 16 of her team-high 18 points in the first half.
The Friars trailed by 10 at halftime (39-29) as the Hoyas shot a sizzling 68.4-percent from the floor (13-19), including 85.7-percent from beyond the three-point arc (6-7).
Providence cut the deficit to five (39-34) in the opening 1:05 of the second half with a 5-0 run. The Friars kept the Hoyas within reach and finally took the lead (52-51) with 7:28 on the clock. Georgetown regained the lead a little over a minute later at 53-52 and never relinquished it. The Friars trailed by one (56-55) with 4:35 remaining in the game, but the Hoyas closed out the contest with a 17-11 scoring advantage.
Joining Snyder in double figures for Providence was sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) who had 12 points. Junior Aga Lorenc (Lubycza, Poland) and freshman Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) each tallied 10 points. Marandola and Lorenc each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Marandola also recorded four assists and three steals.
For Georgetown, Kieraah Marlow contributed 15 points, followed by 13 points from Aminata Diop and 12 points from Kristin Heidloff. Heidloff dished out a game-high five assists. Diop led the Hoyas on the boards with seven.
Providence College (13-15, 3-12 BIG EAST) returns to action on Monday, February 26 against BIG EAST foe Villanova. The game will be played in Villanova, Pa. and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. It will mark the regular-season finale for both teams. The Friars are still alive for the league's final spot at the 2007 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship.
