NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Alex Redding, a native of Newton, Mass., returned to his hometown and scored the winning goal in the 35th minute to lift the Providence College men's soccer team to a 1-0 upset victory over No. 9 Boston College Tuesday night in a non-conference match. It marked the Friars' first win over a ranked team this season as they improved to 7-5-1 overall, including a 3-3-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The Eagles fell to 7-3-1 and 4-0-0 in the ACC. It also was PC's first win over Boston College since the first match of the 1999 season when the Friars posted a 3-1 road victory.

Redding, who scored his first collegiate goal in a 2-0 triumph over Marquette on Saturday, October 13, found the net for the second consecutive match. He was able to race past the Eagles' defense on a through ball from classmate Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) and fired a left-footed shot past BC goalkeeper Chris Brown. The Eagles held an 11-7 shot advantage, but the Friars finished a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) stopped all of the Eagles' four shots on goal to earn his sixth clean sheet of the season, including the last two matches. Murray has not allowed a goal in the last 184:47.

The Friars return to BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, October 21 at Pittsburgh beginning at noon.
