PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Men's Basketball team (13-5, 3-2) led wire-to-wire and defeated Rutgers (8-11, 1-5) 78-63 at the Dunkin Donuts Center. The win over the Scarlet Knights snapped its two-game losing streak in BIG EAST play.
Forward Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C./Kinston) led the way for the Friars as he scored 20 points. Hill's 20-point output against the Scarlet Knights marked the fourth time in five games in which the senior scored 20 points or more. Hill also pulled down 13 rebounds to collect his sixth double-double of the season.
Teammates Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass./St. Andrew) and Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga./Wheeler) also scored in double figures for the Friars. McDermott posted 19 points, while Kale and Curry each netted 13.
The Friars opened the first four minutes of the game with a 10-2 run to force a Rutgers timeout. PC increased its lead to 12 as Hill scored on a two hand dunk to give the Friars an early 10 point lead.
The Scarlet Knights responded to the early Friars surge as they scored the next seven points to cut the PC advantage to 14-11. The Friars responded as they went on a 9-0 run to take a 15 point lead, which was their largest lead of the first half. During the stretch, Rutgers went six minutes without scoring a point.
PC took a 31-22 lead into the locker room. The 22 points scored by Rutgers in the first half was the second lowest output by a PC opponent (Brown had 19 back on 11/18). Hill and McDermott each chipped in with eight points.
The Friars improved to 9-1 when leading at the half, while the Scarlet Knights fell to 0-11 when trailing at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, PC reeled off an 8-4 run. During the run, Hill scored six of the Friars first eight points to give PC 39-26 lead.
The Friars led by as many as 18 points midway through the second half.
Rutgers closed to within 11 points at 70-59 with just under two minutes to go in the game, but it would get no closer as the Friars captured their 13th win at home.
The Friars return to action at 7:30 on Jan. 20 against Villanova at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
