"At guard from Katonah, New York, number one, Donnie McGrath!" Friar fans have heard that name in the PC starting lineup consistently through out the past four years. Making 117 starts in his collegiate career, the durable McGrath set the school standard in that category. More important than the starts, could be the finishes. The Empire State-native finished first on PC's all-time minutes played list with 4,128. He has played an entire game 12 times during his collegiate career, and five times during his senior season. Finally of course, McGrath ranks as PC's all-time three-point shooter with 274 trifectas including an NCAA-record nine-for-nine performance against Virgina on February 2, 2005.

It's only fitting that he wore No. 1 during his time here at Providence, the lone men's basketball player ever to do so. Chosen out of deference to his brother, Tom, Donnie has etched his name into the storied Providence College men's basketball history at No. 1.

"I've had a good opportunity here at Providence College," McGrath said recently while reflecting back on his Friar career. "The things I've done just show that all the hard work has paid off." From a freshman single-game high of 13 assists in just his third collegiate contest, to a 70-51 upset win over No. 14 Illinois in front of a nearby hometown crowd at Madison Square Garden as a sophomore. An NCAA record-setting night against Virginia as a junior and a career which saw him pass Jamel Thomas' PC record of threes as a senior, McGrath has certainly lived up to his billing. He also became the 37th Friar men's basketball player to register 1,000 points in his career and is on pace to finish among the top-20 scorers in school history.

With a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio for his career, and an unquestioned ability to score, including a stellar 84-percent career mark from the free throw line, McGrath also had solid defense on an opponent's top guard night in and night out. An exhaustive task, he also averaged a team-high 37.0 minutes per game, a figure that ranked third in the BIG EAST.

As a senior, McGrath stepped into a leadership role without hesitation. Leading an inexperienced squad that started three freshmen and a sophomore, he was a leader on the court and mentor to first-year guards Sharaud Curry and Weyinmi Efejuku. Junior Herb Hill blossomed onto the scene as he and Donnie became a significant offensive tandem during the 2005-06 season. McGrath also suited up with Sheiku Kabba, Rob Sanders, Marcus Douthit and Tuukka Kotti.

"Providence is a great place to go to school, in a great city. It will always be a special place to me," McGrath concluded. Current Friar fans know he holds a special place at PC as well and future fans can learn by looking no farther than his number 1.
