SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Providence College women's basketball team (8-15, 3-9 BIG EAST) picked up its second straight win with a 71-69 victory at Seton Hall (6-17, 3-9 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon. PC senior Allie Gard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) sank a pair of free-throws with three seconds left to give the Friars their first conference road win of the season.
Freshman Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) added a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in front of her hometown crowd.
With the Friars leading 60-58 late in the contest, Seton Hall used a 9-2 run to post a 67-62 lead. Consecutive baskets from junior Monique Blake and two free-throws from junior Heta Korpivaara fueled the effort.
Providence responded and cut the lead to two as freshman Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) hit a three-pointer with 2:07 remaining in the game, but SHU answered quickly with a field goal.
Trailing by four, Darrian and junior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) each hit a shot with under a minute to play to tie the game, 69-69. After Snyder's make, the Pirates called a timeout with 14 seconds showing on the clock and a chance to take the final shot.
Out of the timeout, the Pirates missed a shot, and fouled Gard on the ensuing rebound, leaving only three seconds in the game. After taking another timeout following Gard's successful free-throws, Seton Hall senior Julie Costello' full-court pass attempt was deflected, and the Pirates were unable to take a clean shot before the final buzzer.
Providence took the game's first significant advantage, building a 18-7 lead in the opening eight minutes of the game. However, Seton Hall battled back, using a 13-2 run to take a 21-20 lead at the 7:06 mark.
After the two early runs, neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way. Both squads had efficient offensive performances. Seton Hall shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the field, while the Friars shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64). The Pirates held held a two-point lead at the half, 33-31, but the Friars outscored SHU over the final 20 minutes, 40-36.
Providence also saw four players score at least 10 points. Snyder led the team with 23 points, shooting 9-of-20 from the field. Gard and Nwafali both netted 12, with Gard also dishing out a team-high seven assists. The Friars hit five three-pointers in the game, while the Pirates only mustered one.
