Women's Hoops Falls To Yale, 68-55

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Yale, 68-55, on Friday, December 29 in New Haven, Conn. The Friars fall to 9-4 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 4-7.

The Bulldogs took a 30-28 lead into halftime as Jamie Van Horne connected on eight first-half points. Providence was led offensively in the opening 20 minutes by senior Kristina Baugh (Boston, Mass.) who scored 11 points. The Friars shot 54.5-percent from the field in the opening half on 12-of-22 shooting. Yale hit just nine-of-27 shots in the first half. However, Yale held the edge in scoring from the foul line (8-10) and from beyond the three-point arc (4-11). Providence was 0-4 from the three-point line and 4-9 from the free-throw line.

Providence trailed in the second half until sophomore Ashley Etheridge (Portland, Conn.) knocked down her third three-pointer of the half to make the score 44-44 with 12:26 left in the game. The Friars took their first lead of the second half at the 10:42 mark as freshman Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) connected on a lay-up to give PC a 46-45 advantage. Yale went on to outscore Providence 28-11 down the stretch to secure the 68-55 win.

Etheridge finished the night with a game-high 19 points for Providence. Baugh completed the evening with 12 points. Erica Davis led Yale with 19 points, followed by 10 points from Melissa Colborne.

Yale hit 28-of-38 free throw attempts in the game, compared to PC's seven-of-15 shooting from the line. The Bulldogs also held a 43-31 advantage in rebounding.

Providence (9-4) returns to action on Sunday, December 31 against Harvard University at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
