PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated, 1-0, by the University of Connecticut Tuesday afternoon at PC's Glay Field. The Friars suffered their first BIG EAST home loss this season as they fell to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies improved to 7-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference.
The only goal of the match was scored in the 31st minute as sophomore O'Brian White recorded his team-leading sixth tally of the season. Junior Chukwudi Chijindu, who had just entered the match as a substitute, played the ball to White at the top of the 18-yard box. White, whose back was towards the goal, controlled the pass and made a quick turn before firing a low right-footed shot to the left corner that eluded PC goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.).
The Friars had several scoring opportunities off corner kicks early on, but were unable to capitalize. However, it was not until the 88th minute that PC had its best scoring chance. Junior Hadrien Toure (Lyon, France) sent a cross from the right flank to sophomore Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.), but Ritter's header from five yards out bounced in front of the goal and over the crossbar. The Friars held an 16-8 shot advantage and also held the edge on corner kicks, 8-3. UConn goalkeeper Matt Sangeloty made a career six saves, while Konopka stopped one shot.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 7 with a BIG EAST home match against Pittsburgh at 1:00 p.m.
