PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 13th-ranked Providence College field hockey team defeated the 9th-ranked Connecticut Huskies, 2-1, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, October 28 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. With the win the Friars claim a share of the 2006 BIG EAST Conference Regular-Season Title and will be the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship, scheduled for November 4-5 in Louisville, Ky.

The Friars got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead at 21:45 as sophomore Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) deflected a pass from senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) into the back of the cage. McGow was credited with the assist. UConn tied the game at the 32:58 mark as Meagan Hoffman connected off of a feed from Lizzy Peijs to make the score, 1-1.

Junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 47:59 as she tipped in an initial shot taken by McGow. McGow was awarded her second assist of the game on the play.

PC outshot UConn, 11-8, and held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Connecticut held the edge in penalty corners, 6-4.

Freshman Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) made four saves in goal for Providence. Briana Koza made seven saves for UConn in the cage.

Providence College concludes its regular-season schedule with a 17-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars will return to action on Saturday, November 4 in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. The Friars will play No. 3 seed Villanova at 11:00 a.m. on November 4 in the first semifinal game. Louisville, who also claimed a share of the BIG EAST Regular-Season title will be the No. 1 seed and will play No. 4 seed Connecticut at 1:00 p.m. in the second semifinal. All games in the tournament will be played at Trager Field in Louisville, Ky.
