Field Hockey Advances To BIG EAST Championship Game

LOUISVILLE, KY. - The second-seeded Providence College field hockey team advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game with a 4-2 victory over third-seeded Villanova on Saturday, November 4 at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. With the victory, Providence improves to 18-3 overall. Villanova falls to 13-8 on the season.

"Villanova is a very talented, hard-working team and they played a great game today," said Providence Head Coach Diane Madl. "We are thrilled to earn this win. Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make it to the BIG EAST Championship game, and we couldn't be happier to realize that goal. Now we will set our sights on a new goal of winning the league championship."

In the first half, the Friars got on the board 9:01 into the game to take a 1-0 lead as senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) knocked in a reverse shot, unassisted. Freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) put Providence ahead, 2-0, at the 28:14 mark after carrying the ball down the left side line and into the circle. She then planted a hard shot into the lower right side of the cage, unassisted. Villanova managed to get on the board with 3:30 remaining in the first half as Sam Coveleski deflected the ball into the cage off of a free hit from the top of the circle. Stephanie Campbell was credited with the assist.

In the second half, junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) tallied an unassisted goal at 40:29 to put the Friars up 3-1. Maguire netted the goal on a hard shot from right side of the circle into the lower left hand side of the cage. At 43:42, Villanova tacked on another goal to make the score, 3-2. Allison Boris tipped in a feed from Megan Foster. Providence added an insurance goal to make the final score, 4-2. Sophomore Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) was credited with the goal off a pass from junior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) during a penalty corner at 46:24.

Freshman Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.), who earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year honors, earned the win with five saves. Villanova goalkeeper Alex Whalen made eight saves for the Wildcats. Providence outshot Villanova, 13-12, and held a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal. Providence also recorded a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.

Providence (18-3) will face the winner of the second semifinal game which showcases top-seeded Louisville and No. 4 seed Connecticut. That game was to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of the Providence vs. Villanova game. The BIG EAST Championship game will be played at Trager Stadium on Sunday, November 5 at Noon.
