Indianola, Pa. - After falling behind 2-0, the Providence women's soccer team mounted a strong comeback, but it fell just short as the Friars dropped a 3-2 decision to Pittsburgh at Founders Field on Friday evening. With the loss, Providence falls to 4-7-5 overall and 1-7-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Panthers improve to 8-6-3 and 3-5-2 in conference play.
Katie Surma put the Panthers up 1-0 in the game's 31st minute. Surma managed to find the net in a scramble after Jennifer Kritch served the ball in off a corner kick.
The Panthers headed into the second half with the 1-0 lead. Four minutes into the second half, Corina Sebesta blasted a shot into the back of the Providence net. Sebesta received a pass from Kristina Francois, took a few touches and then fired a shot 30 yards from the goal.
The Friars responded in the game's 75th minute when senior Erin Mastrodonato (Rochester, N.Y.) connected on a pass from sophomore Kelly Determan (San Diego, Calif.). Mastrodonato shot the ball into the lower right corner of the Panther goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.
With 74 seconds remaining in the contest, Ashley Habbel capitalized on a pass from senior Carli Brill and scored a key insurance goal for Pittsburgh.
Within 22 seconds, however, Providence answered as freshman Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) gathered a pass from freshman Greta Houlihan (Bel Air, Md.). Camburn finished her opportunity at the 89:38 mark to make it a 3-2 final. Camburn leads the Friars in scoring with five goals and 11 points.
