PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Holy Cross, 4-3, on Wednesday, September 7 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Senior forward Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) registered two goals to lead the Friar effort, and freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) collected nine saves for her second collegiate victory. Scavelli's ninth save of the game came as time expired during a Holy Cross penalty corner.

Lary put the Friars ahead, 2-0, with a pair of early goals within the first four minutes action. Just 3:16 into the game, Lary connected on a penalty corner assisted by junior Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.). Lary connected on her second goal of the game, unassisted, 43-seconds later. Junior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) gave Providence a 3-0 lead at the 11:42 mark, unassisted. Holy Cross finally got on the board at the 16:51 mark as Sara O'Coin connected off a pass from Tara Welch. The two teams were scoreless the remainder of the half, and PC took a 3-1 lead into the break.

Holy Cross tied the game early in the second half on consecutive goals from Jenna Cook. Her first tally was unassisted and came just 1:02 into the second half. Three minutes and 31-seconds later, Cook tied the game, 3-3, as she converted a feed from O'Coin. The Friars regrouped and held Holy Cross scoreless the rest of the way.

Weinstein scored the game-winning goal for Providence at 43:57 off a penalty corner. Junior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) was credited with the assist. It marked the first goal of the season for Weinstein and the first game-winning goal of her career.

Prior to the start of the game, Providence College held a ceremony to bless the field and officially celebrate its opening. A crowd of over 400 spectators were on hand, as the student-body has returned to campus for fall semester.
