IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Iowa, 5-0, on Sunday, September 11 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who finished the 2004 season with a No. 11 national ranking, got two goals from freshman Caitlin McCurdy. Providence's freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded 12 saves. She faced a total of 25 Hawkeye shots, 17 of which were on goal.
Iowa got two early goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead 5:33 into the game. Heather Schnepf tallied the Hawkeyes' first goal at 2:24, unassisted. Shelby Roche followed with a goal off a penalty corner assisted by Kara Zappone at 5:33. Iowa extended its lead to 3-0 at the 21:20 mark with an unassisted goal from Lauren Pfeiffer.
In the second half, the two teams were scoreless until Iowa freshman Caitlin McCurdy posted two goals in the last 11 minutes of action. At 58:59, McCurdy converted on a penalty corner, unassisted. She registered the Hawkeyes' fifth and final goal of the day at the 64:23 mark off another penalty corner. McCurdy's second goal was assisted by Roche and Debbie Birrell.
Providence (2-4) returns home to host the University of Rhode Island on Friday, September 16 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
