PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Colgate, 3-1, on Sunday, September 25 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The Friars used a three-goal first half to solidify the win, while holding Colgate to just five total shots and one goal.

Junior Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) gave the Friars an early 1-0 lead as she connected on her third goal of the season 7:06 into the game. The goal came off a penalty corner, assisted by junior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.). At the 21:36 mark, junior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) contributed a goal off a feed from senior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) to give PC a 2-0 advantage. Nearly seven minutes later, junior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) recorded her first goal of the season at the 28:32 mark. Sickel's goal was assisted by McGow.

In the second half, the Friars were held scoreless despite eight shot attempts. Colgate got on the scoreboard once in the half, as Lauren Carey connected on a goal at 52:06. Carey took an initial shot on goal, which was saved by Providence's keeper. She quickly collected the rebound and lifted another shot passed the goalie for the score.

Freshman Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) registered two saves for Providence in the victory. Jacque DeMarco made 15 saves for Colgate in the effort.

With McGow's two assists this afternoon, she moves into sole possession of 10th place on Providence's all-time scoring list, and into a tie for sixth place all-time in career assists. To date, McGow has scored 72 career points on 23 goals and 26 assists. She also is tied for 12th place all-time in career goals (23) at PC.

Providence (3-8) returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 against 20th-ranked Harvard at 7:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
