Providence Field Hockey Upends Harvard In Overtime, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Harvard, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday, September 28 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The win over Harvard is the first for PC in field hockey since the 1996 season. Senior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal for the Friars off a pass from sophomore Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) with 6:55 remaining in the first overtime session.
The Friars got on the board 15:53 into the first half to take a 1-0 lead as Maguire connected off a pass from Lary. PC held the Crimson scoreless in the half to maintain the 1-0 lead at break.
In the second half, Harvard tied the score, 1-1, as Jennifer DeAngelis scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner at the 40:51 mark. Jen McDavitt and Jana Berglund were credited with the assists. The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1, and were forced to play overtime. In the OT session, PC held a 5-1 advantage in shots. Lary was able to give the Friars the lift they needed on the team's fifth shot attempt as she found the back of the cage off a Maguire feed.
Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) registered seven saves in the victory for PC. Kelly Knoche made five saves for Harvard in the effort. For the game, each team took nine shot attempts. Harvard held the advantage on penalty corners, 7-4.
Providence (4-8) returns to action on Sunday, October 2 against #11 Louisville. The game marks the first BIG EAST Conference game of the season for PC, and the first-ever league match-up between the two teams. The game is scheduled to be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
