Providence College (0-0, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team opens the 2005 schedule against Ohio on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. The match-up marks the first game of the season for PC, and will be the first-ever contest played at Providence's newly constructed Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Friars completed the 2004 campaign with a 10-10 overall record, and return eight of it's 11 starters to the field in 2005. The team welcomes back it's top-two scorer's from a year ago in junior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) and senior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.). McGow led the Friars with 38 points on 11 goals and 16 assists, while Lary netted 24 points on eight goals and eight assists. McGow is a two-time STX/NFHCA Regional All-America selection and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2004. Recently, McGow was honored as a member of the 2005 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Lary was recognized as a STX/NFHCA Regional All-Amerian in 2003. Joining them is junior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.), who was named the 2005 BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Sickel earned STX/NFHCA Second-Team Regional All-America and BIG EAST Second-Team honors in 2004. She registered 12 points last year on five goals and two assists. Sophomore Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) also brings some offensive firepower back to the starting lineup. As a freshman, she scored six goals and added one assist for 13 points.
OHIO (0-0, 0-0 Mid-American): Ohio will face Providence for it's second game after opening the 2005 season against Northeastern on Saturday, August 27 in Boston, Mass. In 2004, the Bobcats finished the season with a 7-15 record. Ohio returns four of it's top-five scorer's from last season, including Lindsay Rothenberger, Chelsea Mearig, Erica Bundalo and Amanda Arnold. Rothenberger, Mearig and Bundalo led the Bobcats in 2004 with 21 points apiece. Arnold finished the year with 14 points. Goalkeeper Jennifer Cote returns to the cage for Ohio in 2005. In 2004, Cote registered a 2.82 goals against average and a 0.751 save percentage in 1,488 minutes of action.
