Women's Basketball Drops 99-59 Decision To West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by West Virginia, 99-59, in BIG EAST Conference action at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va. on Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Meg Bulger poured in a game-high 28 points to lead the Mountaineers. Sophomore Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) netted 23 points for the Friars.

In the first half, West Virginia connected on 71.4-percent of their attempts from the field (20-28), including five-of-eight (62.5-percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Bulger poured in 21 points in the half on 9-11 shooting, including a three-of-three performance from three-point territory. Providence got a team-best 11 points from Snyder in the opening 20 minutes of play.

In the second half, the Friars improved their shooting efforts, and making 51.9-percent of their field goal attempts (14-27). However, the Mountaineers remained hot in the second half, and connected on 18-30 attempts from the floor (60.0-percent), including seven-of-13 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. For the half, the Mountaineers held a 51-37 scoring advantage to take the 99-59 victory. PC's 37 points are the most the Friars have scored in a half this season. The Friars' 59 points are the second most the team has scored this season in a single game.

Four Mountaineers joined Bulger in double figures. Olayinka Sanni registered 18 points and a team-high five rebounds. Kate Glusko scored 14 points, followed by Chakhia Cole (12 points) and LaQuita Owens (11 points). Yolanda Paige, who leads the nation in assists this season, recorded 11 hand-outs.

Snyder reached the 20-point plateau for the third time in her career, and the second game in a row. She has reached double figures in scoring during 20 of the 24 games she has played, including each of the last 12. Classmate Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) scored 17 points for Providence. Freshman Kristen Brown (River Vale, N.J.) contributed 11 points and a game-high five rebounds. Brown scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half.

Providence College (1-24, 0-14 BIG EAST) will return to Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. to take on St. John's in a BIG EAST match-up on Saturday, February 26. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. The Friars conclude their regular-season schedule on Monday, February 28 against Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m. PC's game vs. the Panthers will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
