Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Florida coach Billy Donovan was known as a hard-nosed playmaker during his career at Providence. Taurean Green appears to be following in his footsteps.

Green scored 18 points as the eighth-ranked Gators continued their surprising start to the season with an 87-77 victory over the Friars, marking a successful homecoming for Donovan.

One of the top guards in school history, Donovan scored 1,328 points over his four seasons with the Friars, finishing with a Final Four berth in 1987. Back in town for the first time as a coach, he was honored before game, receiving a collage of snapshots from his playing career.

Florida, which gave Donovan his 200th career win at the school with a 74-66 win over Central Florida on Saturday, thrashed his alma mater by scoring the first 11 points of the game.

Green, who finished 4-of-8 from the field, sank the first of his four 3-pointers to extend the lead to 20-8 with 11:04 remaining in the first half.

Providence fought back to close within 40-34 on a 3-pointer by Donnie McGrath with 57 seconds left, but Green scored five quick points down the stretch, including a shot from the arc right before the buzzer for a 47-34 lead at intermission.

Al Horford added a dunk and a jumper within the opening two minutes of the second half as Florida (8-0) made it 53-43.

Horford and Corey Brewer both scored 14 points and Joakim Noah added 11, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Gators, who moved within two wins of matching the school's best start, set in 1951-52.

Donnie McGrath scored 17 points and freshman Sharaud Curry had a career-high 20 points for the Friars (3-3), who shot 40 percent (25-of-62) and committed 22 turnovers.

PC men's basketball looks to snap a three-game skid as it hosts No. 7 Memphis on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
