PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior forward Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) broke a 1-1 second period deadlock with two goals to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over seventh-ranked Maine on Friday, December 2 at Schneider Arena. With the win, the Friars (7-6-1, 7-2-1 Hockey East) regained sole possession of first place in Hockey East, while the Black Bears fell to 9-5-0 and 4-4-0 in league play.
The Friars were killing a penalty early in the second period when Gajda stole the puck at center ice and skated in on a breakaway, before tucking a back hander past Maine goalie Ben Bishop (Des Peres, Mo.) at 5:11 to give PC a 2-1 lead. Gajda struck again at 14:41 as the Friars increased their lead to 3-1. Gajda, who had just come out of the penalty box, charged the net and was able to score off a rebound from in close. Sophomore Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) and junior Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) assisted on the goal. For Gajda, it marked his team leading eighth goal of the season.
Junior Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) gave the Friars a commanding 4-1 lead early in the third period as he scored on the power play at 2:32. However, the Black Bears, who outshot Providence, 21-14, in the third period cut the lead to 4-2 as John Hopson (Prince George, B.C.) snapped a quick one timer from the slot that beat PC netminder Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas). Maine could not get any closer as Sims finished with 36 saves. Bishop stopped 27 shots, before giving way to Matt Lundin (Apple Valley, Minn.), who made 10 saves in 15:45 of action.
Freshman Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) scored his fourth goal of the season as PC jumped out a 1-0 lead late in the first period, Billy Ryan (Milton, Mass.) responded with a power-play goal to tie the game with 1:36 remaining in the period.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, December 3 when they host Brown in the 20th Annual Mayor's Cup at Schneider Arena.
