Former Friar Jay Leach Plays In First NHL Game

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former Providence College defenseman Jay Leach (Altamont, N.Y.) played in his first National Hockey League game on Saturday, November 5, helping the Boston Bruins post a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Leach, a fifth-round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, was signed by the Bruins organization this past summer and had been playing for the Providence Bruins of the AHL, before being called up to Boston. Leach becomes the 25th Friar to play in the NHL. Nolan Schaefer `03 also made his NHL debut on October 26 for the San Jose Sharks.

Leach played for the Friars from 1997-01. In 142 career games, Leach recorded 52 points (six goals, 46 assists). In 2000-01, Leach was instrumental in helping the Friars to a 22-13-5 overall record, including a 13-8-3 mark in league play as the Friars finished tied for second in Hockey East, their highest league finish ever. Providence also advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
