PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Laval University by the score of 101-92 in exhibition action on Saturday, November 5 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) led the Friars as he had a double-double with game-high 35 points, on 15-19 shooting (.789), to go along with 12 rebounds.

In the first half, Laval hung tough, and led by as many as six, 16-10, at the 11:25 mark. The Friars answered with a 15-8 run, and posted their first lead of the contest, 25-24, with 7:24 remaining in the first half.

The contest remained close over the next few minutes with neither side leading by more than a few points. Hanke led all scorers at the break with 20 points as the Friars shot 54.5 percent as they connected on 18-of-33 attempts.

PC opened the second frame with a 16-10 run to put the contest out of reach. The lead grew to 17, 84-67, at the 5:49 mark. However, Laval came back and cut the PC lead to six points (96-90) with 33 seconds remaining.

The Friars were missing sophomores DeSean White (Philadelphia, Pa.), Charles Burch (Dorchester, Mass.) and Ray Cross (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Sharaurd Curry (Gainsesville, Ga.) who were all out of the lineup due to injuries.

Five of the seven Friars in the lineup reached double figures in scoring. In addition to Hanke's 35 points, senior Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) scored 18 points, junior Dwight Brewington (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) each scored 12 points and freshman Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 10 points and six rebounds.

Laval University shot an impressive 17-34 from three-point. Five different players each hit from beyond the arc, including Simon Gauthier who was 6-8. Dominic Soucy led Laval with 24 points, while Jean-Philippe Morin registered 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Providence men's basketball returns to action on Tuesday, November 8 with its second and final exhibition contest of the season. The Friars will host the EA Sports All-Stars at the Dunkin' Donuts Center with the opening tip slated for 7:30 p.m.
