PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team improved to 69-10 all-time in season openers as the Friars defeated the University of Vermont, 87-77, on Monday, November 21 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence. The Friars were led by sophomore center Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) who had a game and career-high 23 points on a 10-11 performance from the field. He also hauled in nine rebounds.
Vermont (0-2) was playing its second consecutive road game after losing its season opener at Harvard on Saturday.
The Friars held a five-point lead at halftime as freshman Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) paced the offense with nine points. The Catamounts hung close due to the exceptional play of freshman guard Mike Trimboli who scored 18 points in 17 minutes of action in the first half. In the second half, the Friars steadily built up their lead, which grew as large as 19 points (75-56) with 4:27 remaining in the game. However, Vermont outscored the Friars, 21-10, and trailed by just eight points with 34 seconds remaining in the game, before Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) hit two free throws to get the lead back to 10 points (85-75). Vermont hit one more basket, but senior Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) made two more free throws to seal the win.
In addition to Hanke's 23 points, three other Friars scored in double figures. Efejuku scored 16 points, McGrath added 15 and freshman Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Trimboli finished with 20 points for Vermont.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, November 23 against New Hampshire at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 7:30 p.m.
