PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team scored two third period power-play goals to break a 2-2 tie en route to a 4-2 victory over UMass on Friday, November 4 in a Hockey East game at Schneider Arena. The Friars improved to 4-3 overall, 4-1 in Hockey East and are off to their best start in the league since the 1995-96 season. The Minutemen fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The game was tied 2-2 with 4:50 remaining in the third period when the Friars went on a five-minute power play. Just over one minute into the man advantage, junior captain Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) scored his first of the season and it proved to be the game winner. The Friars took a two-goal cushion thanks to senior Torry Gajda's fourth goal of the season at 18:10.
UMass took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Marvin Degon scored on the power play from inside the blue line at 3:00. At 12:51, P.J. Fenton increased UMass' lead as he took a pass from Chris Capraro and beat PC goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) from in close.
The Friars began their comeback late in the first period as freshman Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) slid the puck in front to junior Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.), who tucked the puck in between Jon Quick's pads at 17:57. Junior Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) tied the game at 11:56 of the second period as he scored a short-handed tally. Stamoulis was set up by Gajda and Zancanaro. Gajda, Zancanaro and McDonald each had one goal and one assist.
The Friars outshot the Minutemen, 53-31, as Quick stopped a career-high 49 shots, while Sims made 29 saves. The two teams complete the home-and-home series on Saturday night at UMass.
