PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (2-0) defeated the University of New Hampshire (0-3) by the score of 75-51 in non-conference action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Wednesday, November 23. Friar senior Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) hit three three's in the contest and became the school's all-time three-point field goal leader (202 3pt fg) as he surpassed former Friar Jamel Thomas. He finished the game with 15 points.
In the first half, UNH shot a respectable 41.4 percent from the field, hitting on 12-of-29 attempts, led by junior forward Blagoj Zeko's (Sydney, Aus.) nine points. The Friars countered with an eye-popping 63.3 mark from the field connecting on 19-of-30 attempts. Sophomore Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) was a perfect six-for-six from the field, while McGrath netted 13 points in the frame.
PC held a 44-29 advantage at the half, and held a narrow edge on the boards, 14-13. The Providence lead grew to as many as 24 late in the contest, as New Hampshire never got closer than 11 points in the second half as the Friars cruised to their second consecutive victory over an America East team.
Freshman guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) registered his second double-digit point total as he tallied 11 points. Hanke led the Friars with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds. He was 8-9 from the field and is now shooting 90.0 percent on the season (18-20). Freshman Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) was the fourth Friar to score in double figures as he registered 10 points.
The Friars will return to action on Monday, November 28 at Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. It will be the first of three consecutive road games for the Friars as they also will play at Wichita State on November 30 and at Rhode Island on December 3.
