PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former Providence College All-American Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) made his National Hockey League debut on October 26 and has helped the San Jose Sharks to three consecutive victories.
Schaefer played in his first NHL game on October 26 at Dallas, as he entered the game in the second period for injured Vosa Toskala. He made 12 saves and earned his first career win as the Sharks went on to 5-4 overtime triumph. Two days later, Schaefer made his first NHL start at Los Angeles. He made 21 saves and helped the Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Kings. On October 30, Schaefer guided San Jose to its third consecutive victory as he stopped 23 shots in a 3-2 shootout, home victory against the Calgary Flames. It marked the first shootout victory ever for the San Jose Sharks. In three games, Schaefer has posted 3-0 record, a 2.64 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.
In four years (1999-2003) at Providence, Schaefer played in 99 games and recorded a school record 2,848 saves. He enjoyed his most successful season as a Friar in 2000-01 when he posted 15 wins, led PC to the NCAA Tournament and was named to the All-America second team.
