VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated by 17th-ranked Villanova, 4-1, in BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, October 23 in Villanova, Pa.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead into halftime as they were awarded two penalty strokes at the 25:31 and 27:32 marks of the first half. They were the first strokes of the season called against Providence and Villanova took advantage on each stroke attempt. Villanova's Natalie Balthrop was called on to take the penalty strokes on each occasion and converted each for the 2-0 lead.
Villanova improved its lead to 3-0 at the 43:45 mark in the second half as Allison Boris connected on a penalty corner. The Wildcats took a 4-0 lead at 50:56 on another penalty corner. Stephanie Campbell scored on a direct shot, assisted by Lauren Campanelli and Sara Schmidt.
Providence got on the board at the 59:08 mark as junior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) notched her ninth goal of the season, unassisted.
At two different points in the second half, the Friars had to compete a player down. PC's Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) and Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) each were given yellow cards in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded four saves in goal for Providence in the loss. Alex Whalen registered five saves for Villanova. The Wildcats take sole possession of first place in the league standings with a 4-1 and have assured themselves at least a share of the regular-season title.
The only BIG EAST Conference game left to be played is between Providence and No. 12 UConn on October 29. Should the Friars defeat the Huskies, Villanova will win the BIG EAST Regular-Season title outright. If Connecticut earns the victory, the Wildcats and Huskies would share the regular-season title, each with a 4-1 conference record. Villanova, however, would earn the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship by virtue of its victory over Connecticut earlier in the season.
Providence (6-12, 1-3 BIG EAST) will conclude its season against the No. 12 Huskies of Connecticut on Saturday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
