STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated by 12th-ranked Connecticut, 5-0, in BIG EAST Conference action on October 29 in Storrs, Conn. With the loss, the Friars conclude their season with a 6-13 overall record and a 1-4 mark in th BIG EAST. UConn improves to 14-5 overall (4-1 BIG EAST) and claimed a share of the BIG EAST Conference Regular-Season title.
The Friars held UConn to one first half goal, but the Huskies exploded in the second half with four unanswered goals to take the 5-0 win. Kirstin Galuski led the Huskies with two goals on the afternoon. Rebecca Helwig added one goal and one assist. Jennifer Kleinhans and Cea Fong each added one goal in the winning effort. Lizzy Peijs, Lauren Aird and Laura Puddle each were credited with one assist on the afternoon.
Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) played 53:08 minutes in goal for Providence. She allowed three goals and made five saves. She was replaced by sophomore Katherine Claeys (Lake Forest, Ill.) with 16:52 remaining in the game. Claeys gave up two goals and made one save. UConn's Melissa Bostwick earned the victory in goal with three saves.
