CHICAGO, ILL. - On Friday, October 14, the Providence College women's soccer team was defeated, 3-2, by the Blue Demons at DePaul's Wish Field. Freshman Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) assisted on both goals for the Friars.
Providence got on the board first, in the fifth minute, when Gent found sophomore Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) in the box. Amaral touched Gent's past by a Blue Demon defender and then lifted the ball over keeper Cara LaRocca for her second goal of the season.
DePaul retaliated less than a minute later when Julianne Sitch took the ball to the left side of the field and then blasted a shot into the right corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Eight minutes later, Amaral and freshman Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) rushed towards the goal for a two-on-one attempt that was broken up by the Blue Demon defense.
At 29:53, PC took a one-goal advantage when sophomore Amanda Klane (North Easton, Mass.) touched Gent's free kick past LaRocca for her second goal of the season. Klane's goal concluded scoring for the first half and the Friars headed into halftime with the score in their favor, 2-1.
DePaul came back from the break recharged and evened up the score at the 51:25 mark when Lauren Spacht beat Providence's Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) in a one-on-one breakaway. The Blue Demons continued to apply pressure on PC's defense and finally netted the game winner at 77:44 when Amy Witt headed the ball past Fedyshyn to give DePaul the 3-2 advantage.
In net, Fedyshyn tied her season-high with ten saves for the Friars, who were outshot (24-6) by the Blue Demons.
Providence women's soccer (4-8-2 /1-5-2 BIG EAST) returns to action on Sunday, October 16 when the team travels to No. 8/6 Notre Dame for a 12-noon match against the Fighting Irish.
