The Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first 1:34 of the game, as Providence turned the ball over in each of its first four possessions. Rutgers held Providence to 14 points in the first half on 4-of-18 shooting (22.2-percent) from the field. The Scarlet Knights connected on 13-of-29 field goals in the first half (44.8-percent).
In the second half, the Friars improved offensively, shooting 42.9-percent from the field (9-21). However, Rutgers shot an impressive 58.6-percent in the second half, connecting on 17-of-29 field goal attempts.
Rutgers scored 36 of their 74 points off of 25 Friar turnovers in the game. The Scarlet Knights also held the advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Friars, 35-24.
Michelle Campbell chipped in 14 points for Rutgers. Matee Ajavon registered a double-double for the Scarlet Knights with 13 points and 10 assists. Essence Carson also reached double figures with 10 points. Rebecca Richman recorded a game-high eight rebounds for Rutgers off the bench.
Joining Furstenburg in double figures for Providence was sophomore Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.). Snyder netted 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Providence College (1-15, 0-5 BIG EAST) will return to action on Sunday, January 23 against #14/14 Boston College. The game will be played at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
