WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Holy Cross, 4-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday, September 8 in Worcester, Mass. The Crusaders improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Friars fall to 1-4 overall.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead with 22:11 remaining in the first half as sophomore defender Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career. The goal was assisted by sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.).
Holy Cross answered with two goals in the first half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Tara Welch scored one of her team-leading two goals in the game with 20:43 remaining in the half, unassisted. Laura Cohen scored what proved to be the go-ahead goal with 1:52 on the clock off an assist from Renee Didonato.
The Crusaders went on to score two more unanswered goals in the second half to take the 4-1 victory. Christina Zorzi found the back of the cage with 17:56 remaining in the game on a feed from Cathleen Kerman. Welch picked up her second goal of the night at the 16:10 mark off an assist from Jenna Cook.
Holy Cross outshot Providence, 15-10. The Crusaders took 10 of their 15 shots in the second half. Providence held the advantage in penalty corners, 10-7.
Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones played all 70 minutes in the cage for PC. She made seven saves. Sony Kuhn picked up her fourth victory of the season for Holy Cross with six saves.
Providence College (1-4) will play host to Rider University on Saturday, September 11 at Noon. The game will be played at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
