Field Hockey Downs UMass, 2-1

AMHERST, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Massachusetts, 2-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday, September 29 in Amherst, Mass. The Friars improve to 5-7 overall with the victory, while UMass falls to 2-8 on the year. Providence has defeated the Minutewomen in each of the last four meetings between the two schools.

Massachusetts got on the board first with 26:59 showing on the clock in the first half as Marije Tigchelaar connected on a penalty corner. Assists were credited to Patricia Borneo and Katelyn Woolfrey. At the 12:46 mark of the first, freshman forward Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) tied the game, 1-1, for Providence. Maguire's goal, her third of the season, came off a rebound on an initial shot by sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.). Maguire would put the Friars ahead, 2-1, just two minutes and 19 seconds later with her fourth goal of the season at the 10:27 mark. Maguire connected off an assist from junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) on a breakaway.

Maguire's goal proved to be the game winner as both teams were held scoreless in the second half of play. Her two goals against the Minutewomen mark the first multiple-goal game of her career.

Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) earned the win for PC with 5 saves. UMass goalkeeper Christine Tocco collected 7 saves in the losing effort. The Friars outshot UMass, 18-11, and held the advantage on penalty corners, 12-9.

Providence (5-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) will return to action on October 6 as it faces in-state rival Rhode Island. The game is scheduled to be played at 3:30 p.m. in Kingston, R.I.
