KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated in-state rival Rhode Island, 3-1, on Wednesday, October 6 during a non-conference tilt in Kingston, R.I. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) led the Friars with two goals. Providence, who has won two-straight games, improves to 6-7 overall with the victory. The Rams drop to 3-8 overall on the season.
McGow gave the Friars an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 16:21 mark of the first half. Neither team was able to score the remainder of the first half, as Providence took its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, URI struck first to tie the game, 1-1. Jen Centenich came off the bench for the Rams to score the goal, while Nanci Records was credited with the assist. The Friars would answer with two more goals to close out the game. Sophomore Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) scored her second goal of the season, and just the second of her career, to give PC a 2-1 lead with 21:57 remaining on the clock. Ewens tallied the goal off an assist from sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) during a penalty corner. Ewens' goal proved to be the eventual game-winner.
McGow added an insurance goal off an assist from sophomore Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) to give the Friars the 3-1 win. It marked McGow's fifth goal of the season. McGow leads the Friars in scoring this season with 20 points on five goals and 10 assists. She has reached the 20-point plateau in each of her first two seasons with the Providence field hockey program. She becomes the first player since Erica Hebert `99 to score 20-points or more in back-to-back seasons. Hebert scored 32 points as a junior in 1998 and tallied 31 points as a senior in 1999.
Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) made two saves for the Friars in the win. M.J. Britt collected 12 saves in the Rams' losing effort. The Friars outshot the Rams, 16-6, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 8-5.
Providence (6-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) will return to action with back-to-back games over the weekend. On Saturday, October 9, the Friars will face BIG EAST foe Rutgers at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. at Noon.
