PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars announced their 2004-05 men's basketball schedule on Friday, September 24. The team will add one more game to its schedule and that contest will be announced at a later date. The Friars will play 16 BIG EAST Conference games and a minimum of 11 non-conference contests. The number of non-conference games could expand to 14 if the Friars advance to the semifinals/finals of the Preseason NIT in New York.
The Friars will open their regular season with a home game versus Niagara in the first round of the Preseason NIT on November 16 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN 2. The winner of the PC vs. Niagara game will face the winner of the Pennsylvania/Quinnipiac game on Thursday, November 18 in the second round of the Preseason NIT. The winners of the second round games advance to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, November 24. The consolation game and the championship game for the Preseason NIT will be played on Friday, November 26.
Following the Preseason NIT, the Friars will return to action on Saturday, November 27 versus SEC foe Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, Fla. at 5:00 p.m.
After the Orange Bowl Classic, Providence will return home to face Winthrop on November 30, Rhode Island on December 4, Wichita State on December 11 and Maine on December 21 before two road games at Memphis on December 23 at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN 2 and at San Diego State on December 31. PC's other two non-conference games will be at home on January 3 against cross-town rival Brown and February 2 versus Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Providence's 16-game BIG EAST schedule, which was released earlier in the month, will be highlighted by a home matchup against defending NCAA champion Connecticut on Tuesday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN 2. The Friars' other three nationally televised league games will be against Syracuse on Saturday, January 15 at noon on CBS, at Pittsburgh on Monday, January 31 at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN 2 and at Syracuse on Saturday, February 26 at noon on ESPN 2.
PC's other BIG EAST home games are against Villanova (January 11), Boston College (January 26), West Virginia (January 29), Rutgers (February 13), Notre Dame (February 19) and St. John's (March 1).
In addition to the league road games at Pittsburgh and Syracuse, Providence will play at Boston College (January 8), Rutgers (January 19), Villanova (February 5), West Virginia (February 9), Seton Hall (February 23) and Georgetown (March 5).
In addition to the regular-season schedule, the Friars will have two home preseason games at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Providence will host EA Sports All-Stars on November 6 and Concordia University on November 13. Tickets for all home games can be purchased Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the PC Ticket Office in Alumni Hall or by calling (401) 865-GO PC.
