Box Score

DURHAM, N.H. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated New Hampshire, 3-2, in a non-conference game on Friday, September 24 in Durham, N.H. The win improves the Friar's record to 4-6 overall, while New Hampshire drops to 1-6 on the season.

Sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 19:56 mark of the first half as she scored the first goal of her collegiate career, unassisted. Providence took a 2-0 advantage with 2:59 remaining in the opening session when senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) found the back of the cage on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) and sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.).

UNH trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on its ninth corner of the half, which came as time expired. The initial shot from the top of the circle by Brittany Schneider was blocked by PC goalie Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) but Emily Colton collected the rebound off Jones' pads and knocked it into the cage.

The Friars regained their two-goal lead (3-1) on a low shot from the top of the circle by Phillips with 29:07 remaining in the game. Phillips' goal proved to be the game winner and marked her team-leading seventh tally of the season. Her seven goals marks a personal single-season career high. The Wildcats responded three minutes and 13 seconds later with an unassisted goal from Caitlin Gillen to make the score 3-2, but UNH would fall short in its comeback attempt.

Jones registered seven saves for the Friars in the victory. UNH keeper Christine Buckley collected five saves. The Wildcats outshot Providence, 16-12, and held the advantage on penalty corners, 9-2.

Providence (4-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) returns to action on Sunday, September 26 when it faces Albany in a non-conference match-up at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
