PROVIDENCE, R.I. (December 4, 2004) -- The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Boston College, 7-5, on December 4 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) led the way for the Friars as she tallied five points and recorded her second hat-trick of the season.
Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) began the offensive onslaught for Providence when she scored the first goal of the game at 3:02, assisted by freshmen Rachel Crissy. Classmate Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) got in the offensive flow with her third goal of the season at 16:58. The goal was assisted by defensmen Kristin Gigliotti (Saquoit, N.Y.) and Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario). The Friars ended the first period with a 3-0 advantage when Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.) and Thatcher assisted Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) for her ninth goal of the season at 18:57. The Friars outshot Boston College 16-3, in the first period.
Providence didn't let up in the second period as they would score two more even-strength goals to make the score, 5-0.
Boston College took advantage of the power play as they went 3-for-6, late in the second period. Sarah Feldman scored at the 9:18 mark, while Debora Spillane and Kerri Sanders were credited with the assists. At 14:31, Colleen Harris scored as Sanders and Feldman were rewarded the assists. The Eagles fought back to end the second period, 5-3, when Spillane netted a goal with 1:48 remaining.
Boston College opened up the third period with another goal at 2:18. The Eagles climbed back into the game, 5-4, after scoring four straight goals. Sarah Carlson slapped a short-handed goal from the red line that slipped past Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas). The Friars regained the momentum when Thatcher scored her second goal of the night at 7:05 of the third period. Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Zimmerman received assists on the play. Jill McInnis netted a goal at 7:06, that left the score 6-5, with 12:54 left in the game.
At 13:43, Thatcher capped the Friar offensive with her third goal of the night. Smith and Zimmerman assisted on the play.
Thomas recorded 22 saves, while Christine Moynihan had a game-high 38.
Providence will take a four-week break before facing their next opponent in the year 2005. The Friars will hit the road for a three-game non-conference away schedule that will begin on Sunday, January 2, at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, N.H. Face-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
